Popular communication app WhatsApp is down, with users across the globe reporting issues across both iOS and Android.

Whatsapp allows users to communicate over the internet via calls and instant messages. It was released in January 2009 and acquired by Facebook for US$19 billion (NZ$28.2 billion) in 2014.

Website Down Detector shows the outage began at least three hours ago. At its peak more than 3000 users reported issues with the website.

Problems do not appear to be affecting every user of the app. Whatsapp does not maintain any site confirming outages so it is not yet known when it will be fixed.
