Donald Trump will 'win by a landslide' thanks to Michael Cohen - supporter

Donald Trump will not only survive his former lawyer's testimony, but win the 2020 presidential election in a landslide, according to one of his friends and biggest supporters.

Michael Cohen, who used to be the real estate mogul's personal lawyer, has told the US Congress his former boss is "a racist, he is a conman, he is a cheat".

"He had no desire or intention to lead this nation - only to market himself and to build his wealth and power."

Cohen spoke at length, claiming in 2016 Mr Trump knew WikiLeaks was going to launch an attack on then-rival Hillary Clinton and that he approved a meeting between his son Donald Jr and a Russian operative.

Steven Rogers, a former soldier and policeman, told The AM Show it was a "brutal assault from a convicted felon, from an individual who is trying to save his own hide as we move forward".

"He admitted there was no evidence of any collusion between the President, his campaign or the Russians. And I find it interesting that he and his lawyers met with the Democrats... before he was prepped with this hearing. Which leads us to what is now becoming a great political stunt that will backfire."

Cohen is about to start a three-year prison sentence, relating to financial crimes carried out when he was Mr Trump's lawyer and lying to Congress.

Mr Rogers, who now heads the pro-Trump America Winning Coalition, said there was "nothing new" in what Cohen told Congress on Thursday (NZ time).

"He says he lied on behalf of Donald Trump. But I think many people are now beginning to believe - at least I am - that he lied to save his own hide. That he wasn't there to help Donald Trump - he was there to help himself.

"As all this vets out, I believe at the end of the day we're going to find out that there's a lot going on about nothing that we do not already know."

Among Cohen's claims was that Mr Trump is even more racist in private than he appears to be in public.

"He once asked me if I could name a country run by a black person that wasn't a shithole - this was when Barack Obama was President of the United States... He told me black people would never vote for him because they were too stupid."

Mr Rogers said he's never heard the President say anything like that.

"There was a black woman there who works with the Trump Organisation who was ready to refute that. I've worked with people who have worked with the President - he's not a racist. The President is not a racist. How does Cohen conclude that he's a racist?

"I have never, never heard anything like that... We had a black pastor here, his name is Pastor Scott from Cleveland, who actually publicly stated that one of the friendliest Presidents they've ever had to the minority community is Donald Trump. There's a lot of evidence... that refutes Mr Cohen's allegations that the President is a racist."

Mr Rogers said it was also interesting that while Cohen admits to taping "hundreds" of conversations, he's provided no evidence of his claims.

"Cohen has put a fire under the feet of the President's base and believe me, it's going to backfire on Cohen," he told host Duncan Garner.

"The polls are over 50 percent for him... he's going to win by a landslide come 2020. Believe me. I'll come back on your show and say, 'I told you so.'"

According to poll tracking site FiveThirtyEight.com, Mr Trump's average approval rating is 42 percent. He hasn't had a net positive approval rating since January 2017 - his first two weeks in office.
