An Ohio criminal has sucker-punched his lawyer in the face in court after finding out he was sentenced to nearly 50 years in prison for a raft of charges.

David Chislton was just sentenced to 47 year in jail after pleading guilty to domestic abuse, aggravated arson, assault and cruelty against a companion animal, when he struck out at his lawyer.

A Cuyahoga County Sheriff's deputy's body camera captured the violent altercation, showing Chislton's lawyer Aaron Brockler standing beside the man at the stand.

"I turned to him because I was about to tell him that I will come and meet with him privately to see if there was anything we could do to reduce the sentence, but before I could even open my mouth I heard a swoosh sound," Mr Brockler told an NBC affiliate.

"All I remember is waking up on the floor underneath the table."

After Chislton attacks, the video shows surrounding court security guards rush to the criminal to hold him down.

The lawyer was taken to hospital to be treated for a concussion, while his client now faces more charges.
