More than 80 passengers have been injured after a ferry struck a whale in Japan.

The ship was travelling at high speed when it collided with a large object, leaving a massive crack in its stern.

Experts believe given the damage, it hit a whale.

About 15 of the 121 passengers were seriously injured, and dozens more moderately.

Sado Steam Ship Company apologised in a statement.

Whales migrate though the Sea of Japan at this time of year, BBC News reported.
