A fight over a brownie has left a 14-year-old dead in Texas after being stabbed in the eye and another on the run.

Houston Independent School District police chief Paul Cordova said the 14-year-old boy died on Friday (local time) after a fight broke out at a convenience store opposite Jane Long Academy in the city's southwest, reports the Associated Press.

The 14-year-old was reportedly fighting with another boy of the same age over a brownie on Wednesday when he suffered a knife wound to the eye.

He was taken by ambulance to hospital, but continued to act as if the fight was still underway. He later died from the injury.

The school released a statement saying they were heartbroken.

"We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all who loved and cared for him. We had counsellors available at Jane Long Academy this week to offer emotional support to students and staff."

The alleged assailant is on the run from authorities, and police are talking to his family.

Mr Cordova said the incident isn't believed to be gang-related.
