A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck off Indonesia's Moluccas Islands, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake struck in the sea, 147 km northwest of the city of Ternate and at a depth of 76.5 km.

There were no immediate tsunami warnings and no immediate reports of damage.

On Sunday, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The quake struck 125 kilometres southeast of the city of Palu at a depth of 36km.

A double quake-and-tsunami disaster killed more than 2,000 people on Sulawesi last year.
