Single Indian mother dies trying to deliver baby alone watching YouTube videos

A single mother in India has died after trying to deliver her own baby alone.

The 26-year-old was found dead in a rental accomodation in Gorakhpur on Monday (local time). Her neighbours became concerned when they saw blood seeping out from under her door and contacted her landlord, who forced his way in.

He was met with a horrific sight: both mother and baby were dead, lying in a pool of blood.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the woman had been watching YouTube videos on her smartphone with titles like 'How to deliver baby by self' and 'safe delivery processes'.

She'd used scissors, a blade and some thread in her ill-fated attempt to give birth alone - all of which were found near her body.

The unnamed woman had moved into the accommodation just four days earlier, although she'd reportedly lived in the city for four years.

Her family confirmed she was unmarried.

Local officer Ravi Pai said her actions likely came from "fear of social stigma attached to being an unmarried mother", reports the Hindustan Times.

Single mothers in India are often met with judgment and social exclusion from others in the deeply religious country.
