Explosion rocks central Paris

A massive explosion rocked central Paris on Sunday morning (NZ time).

The explosion happened in an apartment block which was already alight, footage shot by locals on their phones shows.

Approximately 27 flats have been damaged, according to reports.

It comes after a day of clashes between 'Yellow Vest' protesters and police, but the cause is not yet known.

Gabriel Plus, a spokesman for the Paris fire brigade, said that there was "no gas supply into the building", but that "bottles of gas or a barbeque may have caught fire on a balcony, causing the explosion".

Reports are that at least three people have been killed, including two firefighters.

More than 50 firefighters are battling the fire.
