Man buys private island then goes shoplifting

A Florida man has been arrested for shoplifting at a K-Mart store, just days after he purchased a multi-million-dollar private island.

Andrew Lippi - who also owns a 12-bedroom resort - is apparently too cheap to pay for household items.

The 59-year-old's accused of stealing about US$300 (NZ$444) worth of goods - including a coffee machine and light bulbs.

Lippi made headlines earlier by purchasing Thompson Island off Key West for US$8 million (NZ$11.86 million).

He's denying the allegations - blaming it on a "commercial dispute".

Lippi is due to appear in court later this month.
