Man jailed for fatal king-hit of New Zealand-raised surgeon in Melbourne hospital

A man who killed a New Zealand-educated surgeon working in Melbourne after being asked to stop smoking outside a hospital entrance has been jailed for manslaughter.

Joseph Esmaili, 24, punched Patrick Pritzwald-Stegmann in the head in May 2017 inside Box Hill Hospital, a court heard.

The Melbourne man told the surgeon "you need to suck my dick" after he saw him and his friends smoking near the hospital entrance, news.com.au reports.

Dr Pritzwald-Stegmann, who moved from Germany to New Zealand as a child, was rushed to another hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

The Victorian Supreme Court heard Esmaili left the scene without checking on Dr Pritzwald-Stegmann's welfare.

The 41-year-old surgeon was hospitalised for a month before he died, news.com.au reports.

Judge Elizabeth Hollingworth sentenced Esmaili to 10 years and six months in jail for the crime.

"Shortly after the exchange outside, you walked back into the hospital and turned left, heading in the direction of public toilets," she told the court on Wednesday.

"Mr Pritzwald-Stegmann re-entered the hospital, only a few steps behind you. As he walked towards the reception staff at the front counter, he told them to call security to move the smokers away from the entrance.

"As you walked through the foyer area, you overheard what [he] was saying."

Judge Hollingworth said Esmaili then turned in the direction of Dr Pritzwald-Stegmann said: "Why don't you go f**k yourself", before carrying out the deadly attack.
