Melbourne Zoo was locked down after an orangutan escaped its enclosure.

Malu, the 16-year-old Sumatran orangutan escaped shortly after 3pm.

Visitors to the zoo were forced to flee the area, reports 7News.

"We can confirm there was no danger or threat to any visitors in the zoo, however visitors were evacuated as is our standard protocol in these cases," said a spokesperson for the zoo.

This is not Malu's first escape attempt - he also freed himself in 2015, using a blanket to escape from his enclosure.
