A woman living in the United Arab Emirates has woken up from a coma that lasted 27 years.
Munira Abdulla suffered a traumatic brain injury when the car she was in was hit by a bus in 1991.
Abdulla threw herself in front of her son, Omar, to protect him from impact. The then four-year-old came away from the accident with only a bruise.
Omar told The National his mother was left untreated for hours as the family were unable to call for help.

Abdulla was eventually transferred to a clinic in London, where she was declared by doctors to be in a vegetative state - meaning she was unable to respond but could feel pain.
She was moved back to the United Arab Emirates and put on a ventilator and feeding tube to keep her alive, and spent the next 26 years hooked up to the machines.
In April 2017, Abdulla was literally given a lifeline when the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi gave her family a grant for her treatment.
Abdulla was flown to Germany, where she underwent surgeries to repair her muscles and was put on medication to establish sleep patterns.
The 59-year-old started to make noises in 2018, when she heard her son arguing in her hospital room and tried to call out to him.
She was soon able to say his name, and can now recite prayers and hold full conversations with her friends and family.
Omar told the National he was "flying with joy" when he heard Abdulla making noises for the first time.
"It was her! She was calling my name, I was flying with joy; for years I have dreamt of this moment, and my name was the first word she said," he said.
A medical report issued from Mafraq Hospital in United Arab Emirates last month says that is "currently able to communicate with self and surrounding in a very reasonable manner especially in familiar situations."
Since Abdulla entered her coma, she has missed numerous world events, including the launch of the internet, the death of Princess of Diana, the first iPhone, and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
