A US teacher's comments on a child's maths test have been labelled "bullying" and sparked calls for her to be fired.

The petition was created after Chris Piland, whose son attends Valley View Elementary School in Pennsylvania, posted an image of his son's maths test on Facebook last week.

Comments on the test allegedly written by his son's teacher read: "Absolutely pathetic. He answered 13 in 3 min! Sad".

Published on change.org, the petition had nearly 16,600 signatures as of Monday morning (NZT).

"Alyssa Rupp Bohenek is a teacher for the Valley View school district that thinks it's ok to bully and talk down to her students, and needs to be removed," the petition says.

An update posted on the petition on Friday by Aliester Crowley says the teacher in question was being investigated.

School superintendent Rose Minniti told Fox News an investigation had been opened.

She told Fox the result of the investigation would be through "the facts and evidence" as opposed to "social media".
