A boy discovered what looked like two handguns in the park during an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, a woman with the group of children told the Sunday Herald Sun.
The shooting reportedly occurred on Friday about 7.40pm. A person walking through the park found a 41-year-old dead in the park, Yahoo reports.
Senior Sergeant Andrew Brady told Yahoo there was "no evidence to suggest" the shooting was random.
It was concerning a shooting could occur in a densely populated area, he said.
"But we would like to reassure the Victorian public that Victoria Police are doing everything within their resources to resolve successfully this homicide investigation."
One woman walking her dogs in the park heard what she thought were gunshots on Friday night, ABC reports.
"They were just four pops basically," Freedy Coory told the ABC. "They sounded like loud popping sounds."
