Firefighters in Sydney uncovered a cannabis growing operation after they were called to a house on fire.

The fire broke out in a downstairs room and was contained by firefighters on Saturday night local time. But upstairs, they found a sophisticated growing operation in place, with cannabis in all five of the bedrooms.

The firefighters were so efficient the cannabis was largely unharmed, and was only discovered when they went upstairs to see if anyone was home, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Police kept a guard at the house overnight to try and establish who lived there.

No one has been arrested yet in connection with the haul.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the hydroponic crop will be dismantled on Sunday.
