Two men have died in Texas after trying to jump over an open drawbridge with their car as a boat passed through.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the Louisiana State Police confirmed that Alejandro Cazares, 23, and Roberto Moreno, 32, had died after crashing their vehicle near Black Bayou Bridge.

In the early hours of Friday (local time), the two men approached the drawbridge that was closed to vehicles to allow a boat to pass through on the waterway.

A witness told police that one of the men got out of the car and pulled up a gate arm meant to stop car approaching the bridge while it was drawn up.

The car drove under the arm and the man returned to the vehicle.

It then "accelerated forward in an attempt to jump the ramp of the bridge," police said,

"The vehicle became airborne, landed in the waterway, and sank to the bottom."

Both men were later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating the crash to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
