A US woman who was brutally assaulted in the Dominican Republic has shared her story on social media, in the hopes she can warn other women about the dangers of walking alone.

Tammy Lawrence-Daley was on holiday with her husband and their friends at the end of January.

The group stayed at an all-inclusive resort, the Majestic Elegance. Lawrence-Daley says they all went out dancing, then went home.

Hungry after dancing, Lawrence-Daley called for room service.

After she discovered room service was no longer serving, she decided to go for a walk to the lounge next door. When she left her room, it was around 10.30pm.

"As I went through the rotunda between buildings, I noticed there wasn't anyone in the hallway. Not majorly odd, but still eerily quiet," she wrote on Facebook.

"I took about 10 or so steps just swinging my wristlet back and forward, not a care in the world. That's when I heard it. Heavy footsteps.

"Before I could react I was plowed into from behind and immediately immobilised. His arms wrapped around me and he started pulling me immediately into an unlocked maintenance room"

Lawerence-Daley says she was beaten for the next eight hours.

"I was strangled multiple times to unconsciousness. My lifeless body was drug down concrete stairs to an underground wastewater area. I was kicked in the head. I was beaten with a club. And then strangled again for the kill…I was unconscious multiple times during this savage attack, so I have no idea what else was done to me during that time."

She spent five days in hospital and still deals with nerve damage and medical bills from the attack.

She says the resort has refused to reimburse the group for their holiday, nor her medical bills despite the fact Lawrence-Daley claims the man who attacked her was an employee.

"Majestic Elegance claims no responsibility for the attack since I couldn't identify the attacker (even though he was wearing a uniform WITH the resort logo and hit me directly in front of the unlocked maintenance room and dragged me down concrete stairs to a basement so that no one could hear or find me.)"

She finished her horrifying story with a warning to others.

"When you are in unfamiliar places, or even familiar places, please remember, be smart, be safe."
