300 cats, 7 dogs rescued from burning Russian animal shelter

Three hundred cats have had a lucky escape after the animal rescue shelter they were housed in caught fire.

The cats, along with seven dogs, were rescued from the shelter on St Petersburg's Vasilyevsky Island on Friday, the Associated Press reports.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry did not say whether any of the animals in the shelter had been injured in the blaze.

It took two-and-a-half hours for 37 emergency workers and 10 engines to put out the fire.
