An Australian schoolboy who spent six hours in freezing water and was in an induced coma has remarkably woken up and is recovering.

Julian Hohnen, 7, spent six hours in the sea off Queensland's Sunshine Coast when the boat he was in with his dad, Maike, and another man, Stephen Jeacocke, capsized.

They were rescued about 2:30am Sunday and Julian was placed into an induced coma, Yahoo reports.

Unbelievably, he woke up from the coma on Monday and has been able to talk to relatives.

"Our son has improved significantly today [Monday] and is now in a stable condition and talking to us," Maike and mum Susan said in a statement.

"This is a testament to his fighting spirit."

The statement said their son will still require further treatment.

"We would like to thank everyone who has helped and cared for our son, including the amazing emergency services."

Maike and Jeacocke suffered hypothermia but have since been released from hospital, local media report.
