Father's plea for missing Belgian teenager backpacking in Australia

A Belgian father has issued a plea for sightings of his teenage son backpacking in Australia who hasn't been seen since May 31.

As Laurent Hayez pleaded for information on his son Theo, he was overwhelmed with emotion and broke down crying, news.com.au reports.

Laurent urged anyone to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously if they did not want to deal with police.

"I promised Theo's little brother, Lucas, that I would bring his brother home," he told media.

"Please, help me keep my promise to him.

"People have the power, love rules."

Laurent thanked people for donating money which allowed him to travel to Australia to look for Theo, news.com.au reports.

Pleas for information have been shared on social media: "Surely someone has seen him or knows something," one woman posted on Twitter. "Help find #TheoHayez."

Another urged anyone in the area to be on the lookout.

"He's someone's brother, son cousin, best friend. No info is too small or insignificant. If you know anything, please contact the police."

Police say they're hopeful Theo is still alive.

"We're just not clear at this point," Supt David Roptell told media. "It appears to be out of character."
