A three-year-old girl who drowned in Australia after falling off her family's houseboat has been named.

Zeinobiyah Soetekouw, known as Zobbie, was one of 11 children in the Soetekouw family.

She had been playing on her family's yacht on Tuesday when she was reported missing.

Water police found the girl's body 100 metres from the boat which was moored on the Hawkesbury River, north of Sydney.

She had been floating for about 20 minutes, reports 7 News.

Zobbie was airlifted to the Children's Hospital at Westmead in critical condition but was pronounced dead after her arrival.

"It's a gut-wrenching incident," New South Wales ambulance superintendent Jordan Emery told 7 News.

"These paramedics are mothers and fathers themselves, they have siblings, nephews, nieces that same age and we're not immune from the incredible suffering that accompanies jobs like this."

The toddler's parents Beccie and Steve Soetekouw had been living and travelling on the yacht for two years with their 11 children.

Documenting their travels on a personal blog and Facebook page, Beccie described her children and husband as "a large, crazy nomad family."

Police are investigating the incident.
