A British couple have been arrested at Gibraltar International Airport for being drunk while in charge of their three children.

Police were called to the airport after the 53-year-old woman caused "difficulties" with crew members and fell over in the airport's departure lounge, according to a police statement published by local Gibraltar media outlet Rock Radio.

"On arrival, the officers noted that the female and her husband, who were due to fly out later that night with their three young children, were both intoxicated," the statement said.

As well as both parents being charged with being intoxicated whilst in charge of a child, the woman also faced a charge of criminal damage.

The children were taken into police care before being handed over to social services.

The couple were set to appear in court on Tuesday (local time).
