A woman is in custody after allegedly murdering her mother with multiple knives and dropping her decapitated head outside their house.

Police were called to the gruesome scene in Sydney, Australia late on Saturday night after reports of an argument between two women.

Officers rushed to the address and reportedly discovered the severed head on the footpath. Inside the kitchen, they found the partially-dismembered body of a 57-year-old woman. A four-year-old child was also found at the scene with head injuries.

A 25-year-old was arrested nearby and has been charged with murder. She will appear in Parramatta bail court later on Sunday.

Police told reporters the scene was "as bad as it gets" and support is being provided for first responders.

Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden said the woman was fatally injured after "an argument that became violent".

"This is up there with one of the most significant, most horrific scenes police have had to face," he told reporters.

"There is no stepping away from the fact that this was horrific and a significant attack and the injuries that the victim suffered were extensive.

"We understand at this stage that a number of knives were used during the course of the incident. I am not able to specify what kind of knives they were at this stage."

Det McFadden said the family was known to police.

"It is a very difficult, challenging, confronting investigation," he said.

"A lot of considerations need to be made, such as the background about what has happened at the address."
