A member of a prominent American conservative group has been fired after projecting a version of the Presidential seal behind Donald Trump featuring Russian and golf imagery.

The US President was speaking at a Turning Point USA student summit on Tuesday morning (local time) when a doctored version of the presidential seal was projected behind him.

While on first glance the seal looks remarkably similar to the real image, on closer inspection, tweaks to the seal, including two heads on the eagle and golf clubs, can be identified.

The two-headed eagle echoes the eagle which appears on the Russian flag - a possible nod to the controversial ties between Russia, the Trump administration, and the 2016 election.

Golf clubs replace the 13 arrows the eagle is normally holding - a reference to the US's 13 original states replaced by a nod to Trump's favourite pastime.

But possibly the most critical change is to a quote on the seal. In Latin it says "45 es un titere", which translates to "45 is a puppet". Trump is the 45th US President.

The conservative group has since apologised, telling CNN that there had been no malicious intent behind the image and the individual responsible had been fired. The individual supposedly searched Google for a high-resolution version of the image and didn't recognise he had chosen a doctored version.

The White House says it hadn't seen the image beforehand.
