Magnitude 6.1 earthquake strikes off Japan's coast

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck off the coast of Japan.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake as hitting 169km north-west of Japan's Amami archipelago just before 1pm on Saturday (NZ Time).

The shake hit at a depth of 251km.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency said no tsunami warning was in effect.

The Los Angeles Times reports it is the first quake in the area with a magnitude of 3 or greater in at least the last ten days.
