All forms of prostitution are "disgusting" and must be thoroughly rejected, Pope Francis says in written remarks.
"Any form of prostitution is a reduction into slavery, a criminal act, a disgusting vice that confuses love-making with venting one's instincts by torturing a defenceless woman," Francis says in the remarks published on Sunday.
He also describes prostitution as "a wound to the collective consciousness" and "a disease of humanity" which can only be stopped if demand for it falls.
Francis' remarks come from a foreword he wrote for an Italian-language book, written by a priest who helps women escape from prostitution rackets.
The book is called "Women crucified. The shame of human trafficking as told from the street."
