A biology teacher at a top Sydney private school has been charged over allegations he was having sexual relations with a student.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that investigations by the NSW Police State Crime Command's Child Abuse Squad began earlier in July, looking into the relationship between Reddam House teacher Ben Fenner and a student.

The 17-year-old was allegedly sexually abused by the teacher last year.

Fenner was arrested last Friday and charged with 11 counts of sexual intercourse with a person under care. He was bailed until a court appearance next month and has been stood down from all duties.

In a statement on its website, the school says staff were "distressed by this turn of events and want to assure parents, students and all in the school community that Reddam regards this matter extremely seriously".

"Pending resolution of due legal process, the teacher involved will not play any further role at the school."

Fenner's Linkedin has now been shut down, but The Sydney Morning Herald says he said he was an experienced teacher and diving guide.
