A young girl in the United States has died after her father accidently hit a golf ball into her head.

The six-year-old was sitting in a golf cart while her father played at the Links at Sleepy Ridge course in Utah.

According to investigators, the cart was sitting between 45 to 90 degrees off to the side of where the father took the shot.

The girl was hit on the back of her head, at the base where it joins the neck, reports KSL News.

She was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to a specialist children's hospital.

The head golf professional at the course, Steve Marett, said the incident had hit the community hard.

"This is absolutely unimaginable.  It’s been devastating to us here at the course and just in the community of Vineyard and Orem, overall," he told KSL News.

Police were treating the incident as an unfortunate accident and had no plans to open a criminal investigation.
