Alligator destroys watermelon with single crushing bite in viral video

Jaw-dropping footage of an alligator crushing a watermelon with a single bite is going viral.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park - which is based in Florida - posted a video on their Facebook page last Thursday capturing a large half-submerged alligator chomping at a watermelon. It was filmed as part of the park's "CrocWeek".

The alligator, named Bomber, is the park's largest American Alligator at 4.1 metres long.

As the watermelon is thrown into Bomber's jaw, the alligator bites down, with an explosion of slushy red spraying out. After crushing the fruit, the alligator retreats back underwater.

"Bomber SMASH!" the caption for the video reads.

The video has been viewed more than 30,000 times, with hundreds of reactions and shares.

Many were thrilled by the footage.

"He's like "What is this? I am not a vegetarian!" LOL Crazy strong," said one user, while another said: "Bomber is smiling! He loves watermelon!"

"It's hard to stop watching this."

A longer YouTube video from the park shows another alligator also taking a chomp.
