Video has emerged of a horrific attack where a Muslim girl is beaten by thugs while walking through Dublin.

An investigation has been launched by gardai (Republic of Ireland state police force), following the alleged attack at the weekend.

Footage posted to social media on Tuesday (local time) shows what appears to be the girl, said to be 14-years-old, being beaten. Eggs were reportedly thrown at her, while it's also alleged the thugs ripped off her hijab, Dublin Live reports.

The girl can later be heard crying in the distressing video, as she gets back up off the ground.

A probe into the matter has been confirmed by police, Dublin Live reports. A spokesman said: "No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing."

A local councillor asked members of the community to come forward with any information to "nip this in the bud right now".

"It's dreadful," Jim O'Leary told Dublin Live. "Whatever your views are about any issue this is assault, and it's an assault on a minor just going about her business."
