A plot to assassinate the Prime Minister of Samoa has been uncovered by police, according to local media.

On Tuesday, the Samoa Observer reported that police were investigating allegations there were plans to kill Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

Police Commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil confirmed to the newspaper an investigation was underway.

Two people have been detained, according to the newspaper, with one allegedly coming from the Lauli'i village.

The village council met on Monday and Mayor Fa'alogo Sasauli Moli said it is helping police with the investigation in the hope it won't tarnish the village's reputation.
