A man who claims he was fighting Bigfoot gave campers in Kentucky a fright last week.

Campers Brad Ginn and Madelyn Durand ran into the man while camping in Mammoth Cave National Park at the end of July.

The pair told WBKO he appeared agitated and believed something had destroyed the campsite.

"[He said] it was Bigfoot country which seemed a little weird that he would say that," Ginn said.

The man warned the pair to protect themselves and said he was searching for whatever destroyed the campsite.

"He said 'I hope you have weapons' and then he flashed his gun at us and was like 'I have this so if anything happens to you then just yell and I'll come," Durand added.

The couple heard a gunshot shortly after the conversation and quickly called 911. They then hiked 8km back to their car and met with park rangers.

Rangers made contact with the man and are continuing to investigate the incident. A spokesperson for the park said the it is still safe to visit and there are no on-going threats.
