A US police department has issued a warning to parents after ecstasy tablets in the shape of Spongebob Squarepants characters was seized on Tuesday local time.

Massachusetts Police found the colourful drugs during the arrest of 22-year-old Luisceito Cruz-Dubois, who was wanted for multiple charges.

He was charged with two counts of possession to distribute a Class B substance. Both of these substances fall within the category of Class A controlled drugs in New Zealand.

The MDMA found in Cruz-Dubois's possession was shaped in the form of cartoon characters from the Nickelodeon show Spongebob Squarepants. The characters included Spongebob, Patrick Star and Squidward, as well as a Ferrari-style emblem.

Detective John Robinson of the Fall River police told parents they should keep an eye out for these lolly-type drugs.

"Parents, guardians and caretakers should be on the lookout for these as school starts and Halloween is fast approaching," he wrote in a statement on Wednesday, local time.

"Anyone coming in contact with this or similar items should stop handling it and contact police."
