The mother of a newborn baby who died after contracting an enterovirus has spoken out about the devastating ordeal.

Baby Julian died in a children's hospital in Sydney earlier this month. His mum, Denise Brajkovic, had been in hospital before the birth with a high temperature, and had been shaking.

She was discharged - but little did she know the virus remained in her body, and was heading towards her baby, Kidspot reports.

Brajkovich said in a Facebook post: "When Julian was born he was born a perfectly healthy baby, or so we all thought.

"On day six Julian was getting more and more lethargic and wouldn't feed at all.

"Little did we know that this evil virus had been transferred to Julian."

Brajkovich said they knew something wasn't right, and they rushed Julian to hospital.

She wrote that the doctor on-call immediately recognised he had Echovirus 9 - a strain of enterovirus.

"Deadly to infants. No cure. No drugs that can save him. Those words were unbelievable to hear.

"Julian fought all the way and didn't give up. The bravest little soul one could imagine."

The mother now wants to raise awareness about the illness.

"We are reaching out to you all, all your contacts on Facebook and theirs [sic] to spread Julian's story, in [the] hope that we can reach other parents.

"WE MUST STOP THIS VIRUS FROM KILLING OUR BABIES."
