A bomb disposal robot has been called to a town in New South Wales after a "suspicious device" was found on Thursday morning (local time).

"We have our rescue and bomb disposal staff here who are examining the device and we are awaiting specialist resources to attend," Detective Chief Inspector told reporters in the town of Mullumbimby, 7 News reports.

"It certainly looks like an IED (improvised explosive device)."

The town is in lockdown as the investigation continues, according to local media reports.

ABC reported the operation was expected to last several hours.

Customers and workers from the town's Commonwealth Bank had been evacuated, reports AAP. Other buildings in the area have also been evacuated.
