Ex-Mayor wants town nuked because renters have ruined it

Renters have made a Welsh town so bad it needs to be wiped off the face of the Earth with a "small thermonuclear" bomb, according to the former Mayor.

Dennis Keogh, now an elected Councillor for Neath Port Talbot, has taken NIMBYism to a new level in his opposition to the conversion of a house into flats in his hometown of Aberavon, UK media reported.

"All the trouble is in one place. It all centres around rented accommodation - people don't give a damn," he told a local council meeting last week.

"It's turning into a ghetto. The only way to sort it out is to use a small thermonuclear device to flatten it and start it again."

Keogh was Mayor of Neath Port Talbot until May this year, the Independent reports

"I'm Aberavon-born and I still have family living there - it was a beautiful place to live but I wouldn't want to live there now," he told a council meeting.

Another Councillor, Nigel Hunt, backed up Keogh's claims, saying the house would be "fertile land" for drug dealers with a bus stop only 200m away.

The council later distanced itself from its own members, saying their comments "reflect their individual views", and there was nothing in the law to stop the house being converted.
