A man in Australia taking his new Lamborghini Diablo for a spin may be wishing he didn't push the car so hard.

The AU$500,000 (NZ$535,000) car was left a mangled wreck after careening off the road in Illawong, South Sydney on Sunday.

"The driver lost control and the car went flying off the road down into bushland," according to a witness.

The Australian Crash Investigation Unit, which posted photos of the destroyed car to its Facebook page, said the owner was "left distraught" after seeing the damage to his prized possession.

"The driver kept saying 'it’s new, it’s new'. It was easily a write-off," the witness told the crash unit.

The car, which is capable of reaching speeds of over 320 km/h,  plunged five metres down an embankment into thick bush.

The driver was uninjured in the incident.
