Parents of a 14-year-old boy have been arrested after trying to use him to smuggle drugs onto an Australian island.

On Friday, Northern Territory Police said that on August 12, 110 grams of cannabis were located in the child's checked luggage after he arrived at Groote Eylandt, the fourth largest island in Australia.

The boy's parents were later charged with "procure a child to supply less than the commercial quantity of schedule two drug - indigenous community".

But it's not the first time the cops have caught parents trying to use their children's luggage to smuggle drugs onto the island.

"It's an appalling practice and places the children at risk of harm. The maximum penalty for this particular offence is imprisonment for 10 years," says acting senior sergeant Craig Dunlop.
