A Russian woman has received the shock of her life after the son she thought she had cremated four months ago showed up at her house.

Antonina Mikhailovna, 62, had reported her 43-year-old son Konstantin missing on March 18.

One month later she got a call from Russian police saying they believed they had found her son's body, and asking her to come to the morgue to identify him.

The grieving family then arranged for a funeral and Konstantin's cremation and interment at a local cemetery.

So it came as an enormous shock when Antonina got a knock on the door four months later and discovered Konstantin on the other side.

She told local media she almost collapsed when she saw the "dead man" standing outside.

Konstantin says he had gone to take some time off and "think about the meaning of life". However his return has baffled the police, who now don't know who actually died and been cremated.

"In the morgue of the Frunze district of St Petersburg, the mother, Antonina Mikhailovna identified her son Konstantin as being a dead person who was kept there," a police spokesperson said.

"He looked very familiar, and so I confirmed to police that he was my son," Antonina added.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the mix-up.
