A Florida child has been arrested and charged after "throwing a tantrum" at her school last week.

Local media reported that six-year-old Kaia Rolle had her mug shot photographed, and was even fingerprinted.

Kaia's grandmother Meralyn Kirkland told local news source WKMG she was acting out in class". A school staff member then reportedly tried calming her down by grabbing her wrists, before she started kicking and lashing out.

She was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention centre, and has been charged with battery.

Speaking to WKMG, Kirkland asked: "How do you do that to a six-year-old child and because she kicked somebody?

"No six-year-old should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile centre to be fingerprinted, mug shot."

The six-year-old reportedly has a medical condition, suffering from sleep apnea.

Police told WKMG staff need approval to arrest anyone aged 12 and under, but the officer in question failed to do so.

Kirkland told WFLA the incident hit her "like a ton of bricks".

An internal investigation into the incident is continuing.
