A video showing a man in the United States rapping about killing his girlfriend and burying her body will be used as evidence against him in her murder trial.

Robert Camou was on Wednesday (local time) charged with capital murder after his then-girlfriend disappeared in July.

In the footage of Camou, he can be seen rapping," "I killed my b**** and buried that b**** in the f****** dirt", at an open mic night at a bar in Los Angeles.

Before saying the allegedly incriminating lines, Camou, 27, is reported to have said he cut off an electronic monitoring device from his leg.

Continuing to rap, he goes on to say, "The cops are trying to look for me, and I'm f****** trying to shut my mouth", as onlookers yell, "Eminem".

Police already had Camou in their sights by the time he gave his impromptu performance, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said it had authenticated the video, suggesting it could be used in court, reports the Washington Post.

According to the Los Angeles Times, police had been on Camou's trail for a day already when the footage surfaced.

Michael Moore, the man who recorded the video, said the penny dropped when he saw Camou on television being arrested.

Even before that, though, he had a strange feeling about what he had seen.

"What he said, he said it with such force that people just stopped," Moore told the Los Angeles Times. "They were shocked. There was a lot of hate in his expression."

Police allege that Camou assaulted his girlfriend, Amanda Custer, 31, before kidnapping and killing her.

According to the Washington Post, Camou's own parents had called the police on him after they found blood and signs of an assault in his bedroom.

Neighbours also reported seeing him dragging a body into the boot of his car.

Police later found Camou sleeping in the back seat of his car. There was no sign of Custer, but there was blood in the boot and a "tool used for digging". Her body has still not been found.

At the time of the alleged murder, Camou was on bail for an earlier alleged assault against Custer.
