"I am a very lucky guy," CNN reported him as saying. "I survived cancer twice and here I am. This is amazing."
MacDonald buys a lottery ticket every week. And every week, his wife Claudia tells him the same thing, "get the winning ticket".
When he bought his ticket on September 7, however, she forgot - although it seems MacDonald heeded the advice in any case.
The Oregon man won a prize worth US$4.6 million. After being given the choice of receiving the money over time or getting a one-time payment, he chose the latter, taking home a lump-sum payment of $US2.3 million.
Ashley's Cafe, where he purchased the ticket, also got lucky, receiving a bonus of $46,000.
"We are thrilled to learn that we sold a Megabucks jackpot," Tezra Kong, the cafe's director of operations told the Oregon Lottery. "We are excited for the team who sold the ticket. A big congratulations to our guests on their windfall. Some of the seller's bonus will go back to the team that strive to delight our guests every day here at Ashley's in Wagner Mall."
MacDonald's win after taxes, worked out at about US$1.54 million.
