US President Donald Trump has 'never heard' of a Category 5 hurricane

As Hurricane Dorian bears down on the US, President Donald Trump claims he's never heard of a Category 5 hurricane - although it's the fourth to threaten the US since he came into office.

"I'm not sure that I have ever even heard of a Category 5," said Trump at a briefing with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Sunday.

"I knew it existed. And I've seen some Category 4s, you don't even see them that much," he said.

"I don't know that I've ever even heard of the term other than I know it's there."

He referred to Category 5 hurricanes as "the ultimate".

"And that's what we have, unfortunately."

This is not the first Category 5 hurricane to hit the US since Trump came into office.

In September 2017, Category 5 Hurricane Irma slammed into nine US states. In the same month, Hurricane Maria destroyed the US territory of Puerto Rico, causing more than 3000 deaths.

The country is still struggling to recover, reports CNN.

Last October, Hurricane Michael hit Florida, making it the third Category 5 to hit the US during Trump's presidency.

It wrecked areas of the Florida Panhandle which are still struggling to recover.

Hurricane Dorian is currently pummeling the north islands of the Bahamas, and there is a "distinct possibility" it will hit America according to Richard Pasch, senior hurricane advisor at the National Hurricane Center.

According to the NHC, a Category 5 will cause "catastrophic damage," with homes destroyed, trees uprooted and power outages.
