A man in Australia who killed his then-girlfriend's baby has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison.

Jesse Vinaccia was found guilty in June of child homicide after fatally shaking the young baby of his girlfriend at the time, Erin Baylis-Clarke.

In announcing the sentence, Supreme Court judge Michael Croucher had tears in his eyes, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

During his trial, it was revealed that Vinaccia, 26, had violently shaken 17-month-old Kaleb while Baylis-Clarke was at work in January 2016.

Vinaccia, from Victoria, had moved in with his girlfriend and her child just weeks before the incident took place.

He had admitted to police he was "pretty rough" with the child, following a heated conversation he had with Kaleb's father on Facebook, reports the Sydney Morning Herald

According to 7News, Vinnacia told police he had "put him down in the cot a bit hard" following the Facebook argument.

Vinnacia then found the toddler unresponsive in his cot.

A week later, the baby died in hospital when his life support was turned off.

Experts said his head injuries were caused by being shaken.

Vinnacia must serve at least five-and-a-half years before he is eligible for parole.
