A rural community in Oregon is in shock after five bulls were found mutilated on a ranch, with their sex organs and tongues cut off.

Colby Marshall, the vice president of the Silvies Valley Ranch, came across the grisly find in July.

Marshall has now come up with a new theory as to what happened to the animals.

"We think that this crime is being perpetrated by some sort of cult," he told AP this week.

He said he believes the animals were knocked out with a tranquiliser dart.

Marshall said the animals were "completely healthy", Fox News reports.

"To lose five young, very healthy, in great shape, perfect bulls that are all basically the same age ... that is so outside the bounds of normal activity," he said.

According to Fox, police seem to agree with the cult theory. An investigation into who was responsible is ongoing.
