Canadian woman berates shop assistant for speaking Chinese

A woman in Canada was captured on video berating Asian staff for speaking Chinese in front of her.

In the video posted to Facebook, the white woman calls one staff member "rude as f**k" for not speaking English and to "speak English in Canada".

The incident happened on Monday (local time) in Burnaby, Greater Vancouver, at a Shoppers Drug Mart.

The woman leans over the counter and points and gestures at the staff member.

"If you want to talk to me, you bring your manager here, you idiot," she said.

Allen Tseng, the poster of the video, said it was sad to see racism in Vancouver in 2019.

"I just want to put this lady on blast for being extremely rude and racist. And hopefully, show her there are consequences to this type of behaviour," he said.

Tseng said the staff were trying to help the woman, but they spoke to each other in their native tongue.

"It made me feel sad for the employees that they had to be verbally harassed like that," he said.

The video ends with the woman swearing and walking away.

A spokeswoman for Loblaw Canada, which owns Shoppers Drug Mart, said they have been in touch with the staff and will offer resources and support if needed.

"We believe fully in two-way respect between our employees and our customers and were appalled to see that behaviour," she said.
