Donald Trump shares faked image of military dog getting medal

United States President Donald Trump has shared a doctored image of himself giving a medal to a military dog injured during a raid over the weekend.

On Sunday, Trump announced that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died during a US raid on a compound in north-western Syria. The soldiers were supported by military dogs, one of which was injured during the raid.

Trump later expressed his admiration for the "beautiful dog", which has fully recovered, and has now shared a photoshopped image of it receiving a medal.

"AMERICAN HERO," the President tweeted on Thursday morning (NZ Time). The photo shows the Belgian Malinois with its tongue out while having a paw-print medal wrapped around its neck.

A previously released image of the dog has been inserted in place of retired army medic James McCloughan who was given the Medal of Honour in 2017 for saving multiple people during the Vietnam War.

The image has a The Daily Wire watermark on it. The Daily Wire is a conservative website founded by controversial commentator Ben Shapiro.

Since Trump tweeted an image of the dog out earlier this week, it has become an internet sensation with numerous memes made featuring it.

The dog's name and gender has not officially been released.
