When a local protester wearing a neon-green mankini was escorted away from a campaign event with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, it wasn't by the fashion police.

Rather the man had reportedly tried - and failed - to perform a citizen's arrest on someone who was blocking him with an election sign.

Trudeau was passing through the city of Cambridge, Ontario to visit federal candidate Bryan May, according to CTV News Kitchener.

However when the political leader's bus arrived, the protester - identified as Jeffrey Shaver - caused a kerfuffle after becoming upset that someone holding a sign supporting Trudeau's Liberal Party was blocking him, CTV News reported.

Shaver - known by many as "bong guy" - is something of a local celebrity in the city of Cambridge.

He often appears in the local limelight, and has gained a reputation for holding bong-smoking protests wearing next to nothing.

His almost-naked protesting began after regional police confiscated his medical marijuana and bong in 2016. Although charges related to marijuana possession were later dropped, Shaver was later charged with public nudity for his protests.

He also ran for a seat on regional council, according to CTV News.

Canadian elections are scheduled to take place on October 21.
