Massive exhibition showcases Japan's innovative robotics

Japan's fame as a rugby nation may be on the rise, but that's still dwarfed by it's reputation for technology and innovation.

The Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) - the largest robot show in Japan - showcases just how far the Japanese are pushing the envelope.

The technology is precise and personal. Robots as we know them are rapidly transforming.

If Japanese airline ANA can make it happen, they could one day do away with planes and instead teleport people around the world with robotic avatars that can interact with the world.

Japan means business, investing more into robot technology this year than ever before and manufacturing more than half of the world's robots.

It's that innovation New Zealand wants in on.

The New Zealand Government signed an agreement last month to strengthen its technology research ties with Japan.

"I think we can commonise those ideas together between New Zealand and Japan. Hopefully, we as the Japanese can provide an opportunity to New Zealand," said Kiyoshi Shikano, the CEATEC spokesperson.

Newshub's Emma Cropper went along to have a look.
