'No more arms': Mother suffers brutal injuries after shark attack in French Polynesia

A woman attacked by a shark in French Polynesia on Monday (local time) had both her hands bitten off and suffered a number of other serious injuries.

The terrifying ordeal off the island of Moorea saw the woman bitten on the torso and her arms. She was on a whale-watching trip with her six-year-old child when the attack occurred.

Firefighter Jean-Jacques Riveta, who looked after the victim, told AFP she had lost a significant amount of blood when they arrived.

The woman received surgery after being taken to hospital by helicopter, Tahitian news station Radio1 reports.

"I saw this woman who had no more arms, the other on the left side was hanging," a witness said.

"It was a big panic for everyone," the witness told Radio1.

Shark attacks in Polynesia are reportedly a rare occurrence.
